The Veneto: A guide to this scattered necklace of venetian jewels

The Veneto – the triple crown of Verona, Padua and Vicenza as well as many smaller gems (from Treviso, Bassano, Asolo, Marostica, Castelfranco and Citadella in the north to Montagnana, Arqua Petrarca and Chioggia in the south) is almost entirely overlooked by international tourists in favour of Venice itself. This leaves its delights, from some of the most world-renowned renaissance art to all of the Palladian villas and palaces ever built, from the stunning volcanic landscape of the Berici and Euganean Hills to the pre-alps and mountains surrounding Cortina D’Ampezzo, to the locals, some Italian tourists from further afield and only the most imaginative and intrepid foreign visitors. This guide has been written to encourage you to be one of them! There is just so much to do and see, and the inhabitants are so welcoming and hospitable, the food is amongst some of the best in the whole of Italy and the wine is underrated. Don’t avoid Venice, it remains one of the wonders of the world, but find time to visit this magical part of Italy lying less than five kilometres away, across the lagoon. Read more
